File an Unemployment Claim or Extension

The first step to begin the unemployment process is to file an unemployment claim.  Filing a new claim will establish your benefit year unless you are reopening an existing claim.  Claimants eligible for an extension should receive a letter from the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) with instructions on how to file.  Both types of filing are described below.

To File a New Unemployment Claim or Reopen an Existing Claim:

There are two ways to file or reopen an unemployment claim:

  1. Using the Internet, go to www.michigan.gov/uia and click on “File Unemployment Claim Online”
  2. 1.Using a telephone, call 1-866-500-0017 on the day and time based on the last 2 digits of your social security number.  For more information, see Filing Unemployment Claims by Telephone Fact Sheet

To File an Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) or Extended Benefits (EB) Extension:

There are two ways to file an extension for unemployment benefits:

  1. Using the Internet, go to www.michigan.gov/uia and click on “File an EUC or EB Extension”
  2. Using a telephone, call 1-866-500-0017
