Register for Work & the Michigan Talent Bank
How to “Register for Work” to Receive Unemployment Benefits:

To allow sufficient time for unemployment registration, all individuals should arrive at Troy Michigan Works! no later than 3:30 p.m.

Once you file an unemployment claim or an extension, you must report in person to a Michigan Works Agency (MWA) to “Register for Work”. Registering for Work means a MWA verifies for the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) that you have an active resume in the Michigan Talent Bank (MTB).

Although Michigan Works! assists the UIA in registering individuals for work, we are not authorized to answer questions or provide information regarding the status of unemployment benefits for claimants. All questions, issues, or concerns need to be directed to the Unemployment Insurance Agency. See Contacting the Unemployment Office.

If you have already posted your resume in the Michigan Talent Bank, you still need to report in person to complete your registration.
Unemployment claimants will need to provide the following to “Register for Work”:
- Photo ID
- An official document indicating your social security number such as a Social Security Card or Monetary Determination Letter from the UIA.
To Post a Resume on the Michigan Talent Bank:
- Go to www.michworks.org
- Click on the CREATE A RESUME button in the box “Job Seekers – Looking for a Job?”, or click on the dropdown menu: “Job Seekers” and when a menu appears, click on the Sign up / Create resume option from this menu.
- Fill in the requested information for the Sign up page. All fields marked with a red dot and at least one method of contact are required.
- Upon reading the Terms of Use Statement, click on agree to create a User ID and PIN. (Be sure to keep a record of this information) Click on Continue.
- You have the option of either uploading an existing resume (Word, TXT, HTML, of PDF) or inputting one manually
- If entering manually, select your resume type, either ”Enter Chronological Resume” or ”Enter a Functional Resume” or “Combination” of the two. Insert your resume information into the resume builder and save it. It is important, especially if it istaking a long time to enter your information, to periodically save your work. The “Save Now” option is on the bottom of the page. Also, there is a “Spell Check” icon at the bottom to help with spelling accuracy. Spell Check is not done automatically.
- Enter at least one Job Title on your resume. This is required because it is a criterion for searching for jobs. You may enter up to three job titles.
Updating Your Michigan Talent Bank Resume:
You must go into your resume, from any computer with the Internet, at least every 30 days to update your resume for employer activity. It will also let the Unemployment Insurance Agency know you are actively seeking work.
- Go to www.michworks.org
- Move the cursor on the heading Job Seekers and when a menu appears, click on the Login / Update resume option from this menu.
- Enter your User ID and PIN. Click on Submit.
- Click on Edit Resume to change information and update your resume simultaneously. If you do not need to change information, simply click on the Quick Update link on the left hand side of the screen.
- Click on the Search for Jobs link (in right side of the page) to find jobs that match your resume.
- Click on Log Out to exit (in the upper right hand comer).

If you do not know your Michigan Talent Bank Login information, report in person to Troy Michigan Works! with photo ID so we can provide you with your existing User ID and PIN.
